Understanding Obesity: Malaysian Guidance
- 01
A Long-Term Health Condition
Biology, environment and behaviour can all contribute to obesity. Blame and stigma do not help.
- 02
Assessment Beyond Weight Alone
BMI, waist size, health conditions and medicines help a clinician understand individual risk. BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat.
- 03
Support That Fits Daily Life
Nutrition, physical activity and behaviour support work together. Plans should be personalised and include long-term follow-up.
- 04
Treatment Is Individually Selected
Medication or surgery may be considered after assessment for selected people. Neither is an automatic next step.
A Note on Adult BMI
The Malaysian guideline uses BMI 23 kg/m² as a point for further evaluation and 27.5 kg/m² as the start of its adult obesity category. These thresholds are screening and classification tools, not an individual diagnosis or a treatment recommendation.
